Guide 1 — Getting started

Start your first publication

New publication managers can set up a workspace and create a first chapter. The guide keeps every early step in the workspace, so the first draft is ready for review on the first day.

Steps

Follow the steps in order. Each step produces a record you can open again.

  1. Create a publication

Open Publications, choose New publication, and enter the title and region. The new publication starts as draft and unpublished. Choose a template at creation if one is offered, or start blank and add structure by hand.

  2. Add a chapter from a template

Open the publication, choose New chapter, and pick a chapter template if one is available. Enter the chapter title, region and chart coverage, then save. The chapter has its own stable identity from this point.

  3. Invite an editor and a reviewer

Open People and access, invite the editor by email with the editor role, and invite the reviewer with the reviewer role. Add a second person as approver or publication manager if your team needs that separation from the start.

  4. Open the chapter and add a first paragraph

Open the chapter, choose New paragraph, and pick a paragraph template if you use one. Enter the title, choose a type, and write a short first draft of the text.

  5. Save the first paragraph as a draft

Add geography and chart numbers where the template requires them, add a reason for the save, then save. The paragraph locks while it is open and releases on save and close.

  6. Preview the draft chapter

Open the chapter in preview and read the paragraph in place. Confirm the order, the fields and the type look right before you send it for review.

Check

Confirm the setup is real before you invite wider review.

  • The publication opens and shows as draft and unpublished.
  • The chapter opens and shows its region and chart coverage.
  • The first paragraph saves as a draft and shows in the chapter list.
  • An editor account and a reviewer account both appear in People and access.
  • The preview shows the paragraph in chapter order.

If a check fails, fix the field named in the message and save again. A missing required field is named on the screen where you save.

What is kept for audit and review

The setup stays on record so a later reviewer can see how the first chapter began.

  • Every new publication starts as draft and unpublished.
  • Setup steps for team, templates and presets cannot be skipped without a reason recorded by an administrator.
  • Practice records are marked and kept out of editions.
  • Every save records who saved it, when and why, and every invite and role change is recorded with who did it.
